Got on the road about 9 am. Temperatures would again reach into the 90's, but I felt much better than the previous day. Was a little disappointed in myself for not finding a coastal route though a portion the Michigan Upper Peninsula, but ended up up thoroughly enjoying the lower, inland route. Took me through a number of intersting and pretty up towns mixed in with some good old Americana.
Took a scenic byway side ride to Black River Harbor so I could sit by the lake and have my gas station-purchased turkey sandwich lunch. It was a nice 25-minute ride.
Walked on the Black River Harbor Suspension bridge
and took another side trip to
Potawatami Falls.
As I was riding on Route 2 near the town of Ashland, Wisconsin, I came upon an Artesian well.
For a hot, tired and thirsty motorcyclist, this was nirvana! It was the coldest, finest tasting water I've ever had.
I used the Allstays Campground and RV iPhone app (which I highly recommend) to find and select a local park campground in the Town of Herbster, WI.
First arrived at the General store in Herbster, which had great ice cream and a Minnesota Wheat beer called Lake Superior North Shore Wheat brewed in Duluth, MN. My kind of beer.
Must be my kind of place. I somehow tied the beer to the bike and transported it to the campground.
Had a beautiful beachfront campsite on a small bluff overlooking Lake Superior.
Met my camping neighbor from the next site. His name was Steve and he told me that he saw a wolf down the road from our campground. How COOL!
As I went up to register my site at the drop box, one of the campers walked up and gave me a bottle of ice water. Said I could probably use it. Very kind. Then, went I went back to my site, a mini-van pulled up and a guy offered me firewood. He said he had little kids and since it appeared that a storm was coming, he decided not to stay. The wood was beautifully cut into various sizes. Didn't even need kindling.
Took my first swim in Lake Superior. A total wake-up! An almost numb-skulling experience, but felt good.
In the evening, I sat on the beach diectly in front of my campsite marveling at the sheer vastness of Lake Superior. Watched a lightning storm on the other side of the lake. Skies are different than anything I've seen. A half moon lit up the odd cloud formations. It was quite a site.
